Viva la vinyl! Audio-Technica has just announced the release of the AT-LP5 Direct Drive turntable ($449 SRP), a high-performance record player that combines audiophile-quality sound with elegant design.
“Our new AT-LP5 was created to satisfy discerning audiophiles and music lovers with its exceptional sound, visual appeal, and ease of use,” said Crystal Griffith, Audio-Technica Marketing Manager. “The AT-LP5 conveys all the warmth, richness, depth, and detail that makes listening to records such a rewarding musical experience.”
The AT-LP5’s direct-drive motor system provides stable playback for both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records. A die-cast, machined, and balanced aluminum platter and 5mm damping mat are combined in a platform that’s been engineered to minimize internal resonances.
The J-shaped tonearm (seen at left) is designed to minimize tracking error and hearkens back to the classic, original Audio-Technica tonearms of the 1960s and 1970s. The hydraulically damped arm features a metal gimbal suspension system with precision bearings. It comes pre-mounted with Audio-Technica’s lightweight AT-HS10 removable headshell and the new AT95EX Dual Moving Magnet cartridge, designed exclusively for the AT-LP5. The AT95EX utilizes a host of new construction materials that were chosen to deliver smooth, extended frequency response along with exceptional dynamic capability, imaging, and transient response. The user can also mount the cartridge of his or her choice if desired.
The AT-LP5 provides adjustments for optimum performance including tracking force, anti-skating, and vertical tracking angle. It includes a built-in switchable phono preamp, enabling the turntable to be used with a wide variety of music and home entertainment systems, powered speakers, and A/V receivers that do not have a dedicated phono input. The analog signal path has been optimized for sonic purity with high-quality internal wiring gold-plated headshell connectors, a highly stable internal power supply, and other refinements.
The AT-LP5’s USB output and included Audacity software make it easy to transfer records into digital music files. Its adjustable leveling feet ensure optimum record playback performance. The AT-LP5 is available in available in an elegant matte-black finish and comes with connecting cables, a cartridge alignment, an overhang adjustment template, and a dust cover.
