Spotify’s Android and iOS apps are more popular than any other music streaming app in the world, according to App Annie. The mobile-app analytics specialist’s just-released Mobile Music Streaming report shows Spotify’s app topping the usage and download charts in many countries around the world. It also shows growing usage for local players, especially in India and Japan.
Spotify was the mobile music-streaming app on iOS and Android with the largest number of active users worldwide in Q3, according to App Annie’s report. A year ago on iOS, that title belonged to Pandora. On Android, Pandora was able to grow its usage, replacing TuneIn as that platform’s second-most-popular streaming app.
Spotify has a much larger international footprint than Pandora. Currently, Pandora is only available to users in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, while Spotify is available in 58 markets around the world. Presently, Spotify tops the download charts in 9 of the 15 biggest music-streaming markets, according to App Annie.
Meanwhile, India’s two most popular music services, Saavn and Gaana, were able to enter the Top 10 Android apps worldwide tally. Deezer retains the lead in its home country, France, as well as in Japan, where Spotify still has yet to launch. Japan continues to be dominated by two local streaming services, Line and Awa.
