“What would you do with the records that changed history forever?” It’s a heady question posed by Steve Berkowitz, the mastering supervisor and tape researcher for one of the most important audio restoration projects to date — namely, The Beatles in Mono, a 14-LP box set out today on Apple/UMe. All of the albums in The Beatles in Mono box — from Please Please Me to The White Album (not included are Abbey Road and Let It Be, which were only mastered in stereo) — were cut from the original analog master tapes that were personally approved by The Fab Four and their legendary producer George Martin back in the ’60s, and each piece of new 180-gram virgin vinyl records was lovingly manufactured at Optimal Media in Germany.
